What Colour Should a UK Number Plate Be?
For most vehicles used on UK roads, registration plates must display:
- Black characters on a reflective white background at the front
- Black characters on a reflective yellow background at the rear
The background must not contain a decorative pattern that interferes with the appearance or readability of the registration number. The letters and numbers must remain clearly visible against the approved background colour.

Why Are Front Number Plates White and Rear Plates Yellow?

Background Colour and BS AU 145e
New or replacement number plates fitted from 1 September 2021 must comply with the BS AU 145e British Standard. The standard covers several areas of plate performance, including colour, reflectivity, durability and resistance to everyday road conditions.
The colour of the background must remain within the required range. This means that a material which appears approximately white or yellow is not automatically suitable for manufacturing compliant number plates.
Plate components should be used as part of a compatible and properly tested construction. Mixing unsuitable acrylics, adhesives, reflective sheets, substrates or printing materials may affect the performance of the finished plate.

Can a Number Plate Have a Patterned Background?
A standard road-legal number plate must not use a patterned, tinted or decorative background that affects the approved white or yellow appearance.
Examples of unsuitable background modifications may include:
- Carbon-fibre-style background patterns
- Honeycomb or patterned reflective films
- Colour gradients
- Darkened, smoked or tinted coverings
- Decorative images behind the registration characters
- Materials that reduce the plate’s reflectivity
Decorative effects that alter the background colour or make the registration harder to read can result in a plate being treated as incorrectly displayed. Vehicles with non-compliant plates may fail an MOT, and the registered keeper could face a fine.
Are Flags and Green EV Strips Allowed?
Certain approved national flags and identifiers may be displayed on the left-hand side of a number plate. Eligible zero-emission vehicles may also display an approved green strip.
These permitted features do not replace the main background-colour requirement. The front plate must still have the required reflective white background, and the rear plate must retain its reflective yellow background.

What About Traditional Black and Silver Number Plates?
There is a limited exception for certain historic vehicles. Eligible vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1980 may be permitted to display traditional plates with white, silver or light-grey characters on a black background.
The vehicle must meet the relevant historic-vehicle conditions, including being registered in the appropriate historic tax class. Being more than 40 years old does not necessarily mean that any style of traditional plate can automatically be fitted without checking the vehicle’s eligibility.
For most vehicles on UK roads, the standard reflective white front and reflective yellow rear requirements continue to apply.
